Bevin, Ernest 1881-1951. British Labour
politician. Chief creator of the Transport
and General Workers' Union, he was its
general secretary from 1921 to 1940, when he
entered the war cabinet as minister of labour
and National Service. He organized the `Bevin
boys', chosen by ballot to work in the coal
mines as war service, and was foreign
secretary in the Labour government 1945-51.
